Hey everybody — Pete Macedo, candidate for mayor, owner of Blacksburg Bagels, and your neighbor as always.

Giving you an update on recounts.

What we’ve learned about recounts is that it is a court process. It’s not just a push-a-button situation. The recount has to happen after the votes have been certified — and as of this time, Friday morning, the votes have not actually been certified by the Elections Board. So the votes are not final.

Doing a recount is a court process that, of course, requires a lawyer — or at least it’s a really good idea to use a lawyer instead of representing yourself.

There aren’t a lot of election lawyers in town or in the area, and it is a very expensive process. Just getting the lawyer is expensive. The count itself is paid for by the locality, but the lawyer and all the legal fees go to the candidate making the challenge.

So we want to make sure we do this right. We want to make sure your voice is heard, and we want to make sure we have someone supporting us who can do this properly.

So we are pursuing a recount — but we are learning about this process.

We’ve got 10 days after the votes are certified to file. And again, as of this morning, the votes are not certified.

We’ll see you next time.
