Local elections shape the future of our town—and your voice matters. Whether you’ve voted before or this is your first time showing up for a local race, this guide will walk you through how to register, where to vote, and how to make sure your ballot counts.

Montgomery County Office of Elections
Blacksburg elections are administered through Montgomery County. The county’s registrar is the best place to check for key dates, absentee voting info, and polling details.

Who Can Vote—and How to Register
Eligibility
To vote in Blacksburg, you must be:
• A U.S. citizen
• A Virginia resident
• At least 18 years old by Election Day
Registration
Register online, in person, or by mail. You can also update your address or check your status at the Virginia Voter Portal. Don’t wait—registration deadlines usually fall about three weeks before Election Day.
Can I vote if I’m a student?
Yes! As long as you have an address in Blacksburg where you receive mail. It is your right to vote wherever you lay your head at night.

Polls are open from 6:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Find your assigned polling place here:

Early In-Person Voting
Early voting begins roughly 45 days before the election. You don’t need an excuse—just show up at the designated early voting location listed on the county site.
Absentee Voting by Mail
You can vote by mail if you request a ballot ahead of time. The application deadline is about 11 days before the election. Completed ballots must be postmarked by Election Day and received shortly after.
